BJJ for All Abilities

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a ground-based martial art focused on grappling, takedowns and submission holds. Our classes cater for all abilities — from complete beginners to seasoned grapplers — with no joining fee.

BJJ is uniquely effective for people of all sizes. The art is specifically designed to help a smaller individual control and overcome a larger, stronger opponent through technique and leverage rather than brute force.

All classes are led by our C.R.B. registered, fully qualified instructors. Most beginners notice significant improvement after around six months of consistent weekly training.

What to Expect

Every BJJ class follows a proven structure to build technique, timing and live grappling skill. Here's what a typical session looks like:

  • 1
Warm-Up & Solo Drills We start with a dynamic warm-up and solo movement drills — shrimping, bridging and rolling — to prepare your body and sharpen body awareness.
  • 2
Technique Instruction Your instructor demonstrates a focused technique or sequence — guard passes, sweeps, submissions or escapes — broken down step by step with clear detail.
  • 3
Positional Drilling Partner drills put the technique into practice in a controlled, repetitive way — building muscle memory before live sparring.
  • 4
Live Rolling Sessions close with live rolling (sparring) — applying everything you've learned against a resisting partner in a safe, supervised environment.

What to Bring

  • BJJ Gi (kimono)
  • BJJ Belt
  • Rash guard
  • Water bottle
  • Towel

A white Gi is standard for beginners and can be purchased at the gym. Wear a rash guard underneath to avoid mat burns. No shoes on the mat — bare feet or wrestling shoes only.

Frequently Asked Questions

None at all. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most beginner-friendly martial arts. Our coaches welcome complete beginners and will guide you through every technique at your own pace. Many of our most dedicated members had zero martial arts experience when they started.

On average it takes around 1 to 2 years of consistent training to reach blue belt — the first belt above white. Progress depends on how often you train, your natural athleticism and how well you absorb technique. Training 2 to 3 times per week is the sweet spot for most people.

BJJ is widely regarded as one of the most effective self-defence systems available. Its focus on controlling and submitting opponents without striking makes it highly practical in real-world situations, especially if a confrontation goes to the ground.

BJJ has a steep but deeply rewarding learning curve. The early months involve a lot of problem-solving and humility — but this is part of what makes it so addictive. Within 6 months of regular training most students notice significant improvement in their ability to control and submit training partners.

Classes are £10 per session on a pay-as-you-go basis. Monthly memberships are £50 for unlimited BJJ classes. There is no joining fee and the first session is free so you can try it with no commitment.

No — we can loan you a Gi for your first session so you can try the class before investing in equipment. If you decide to continue, we will advise you on the right Gi for your size and budget.
