A white Gi is standard for beginners and can be purchased at the gym. Wear a rash guard underneath to avoid mat burns. No shoes on the mat — bare feet or wrestling shoes only.
None at all. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most beginner-friendly martial arts. Our coaches welcome complete beginners and will guide you through every technique at your own pace. Many of our most dedicated members had zero martial arts experience when they started.
On average it takes around 1 to 2 years of consistent training to reach blue belt — the first belt above white. Progress depends on how often you train, your natural athleticism and how well you absorb technique. Training 2 to 3 times per week is the sweet spot for most people.
BJJ is widely regarded as one of the most effective self-defence systems available. Its focus on controlling and submitting opponents without striking makes it highly practical in real-world situations, especially if a confrontation goes to the ground.
BJJ has a steep but deeply rewarding learning curve. The early months involve a lot of problem-solving and humility — but this is part of what makes it so addictive. Within 6 months of regular training most students notice significant improvement in their ability to control and submit training partners.
Classes are £10 per session on a pay-as-you-go basis. Monthly memberships are £50 for unlimited BJJ classes. There is no joining fee and the first session is free so you can try it with no commitment.
No — we can loan you a Gi for your first session so you can try the class before investing in equipment. If you decide to continue, we will advise you on the right Gi for your size and budget.
